Monday 11th August
After a surprisingly painless, eleven and a half hour journey, I arrived at 17.20 and was greeted by Margaret and Roxanne who quickly took my temperature and showed me how to put on my surgical mask, a precaution for swine flu and then put me on the bus to Anne Black Guest House, which is in Yau Ma Tei in the centre of Kowloon.
That evening, exhausted yet exhilarated, a group of us, most having arrived earlier during the course of the day went for supper in a restaurant with fish in fish tanks around the walls ready for selecting! Although most seemed to be eating the Hong Kong hotpot (a meal where you have some sort of flavoured soup bubbling in the centre of your table, to which you add, meat, fish, veg, anything and cook it in the soup then fish (excuse the pun!) it out and eat it. It looks just like a cauldron. However,r not quite feeling brave enough and without an English menu, I just went for the rice and veg option (a meal I am already well acquainted with!) A few of us, then wandered around the lights and the bustle of Mong Kok and the ladies market, (apparently the loudest place on earth after 11pm – thanks Hayley for that fun fact!) before headed off to bed, completely exhausted but also buzzing with the lights, noise and vibrancy of this place already!
‘For the next 9 months, Hong Kong is yours, so make the most of it ~ In the welcome letter at the front of our welcome pack - ‘Auntie’ Grace Lee, Project Director of Chatteris.
